First Wednesday Art Walk is Tonight!

5 Jan

Downtown is always worth exploring, but if you haven’t been there lately, why not return tonight, when you can explore it with 10,000 of your friends?

First Wednesday Art Walk, which takes place this evening between 5 pm and 9 pm, is one of our city’s best-loved monthly events. Downtown really shines, with countless gallery shows, live music around every corner, great activities for kids and adults alike, and a feel-good vibe that makes you fall in love with your city all over again. Tonight’s theme is “Little Picassos.” What’s that mean? We’re not going to tell–you just have to check it out for yourself. You’ll be glad you did.

Here’s where you can go for more information about Art Walk. Alternatively, just download tonight’s schedule here.

San Marco Square Holiday Magic – December 10, 6pm – 9pm

It’ll be snowing in Springfield this weekend!

8 Dec

If you haven’t been to Springfield’s fabulous new candy emporium, Sweet Pete’s, you need to upend your plans for the weekend and put Sweet Pete’s at the top of your list. This is, hands down, the city’s most inventive and magical candy store, and it’s going to be even more magical this Saturday and Sunday because Santa is bringing his snowblower!

Housed in a brightly colored 100-year-old Victorian house, Sweet Pete’s is a cross between Pippi Longstocking’s Villa Villekulla and Willy  Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, with giant hand-painted candies decorating the walls, a bannister capped with a glowing gumball machine light, and huge metal flowers standing sentinel at the front door. The store is the brainchild of Peter Behringer who evidently was born with whimsy in his heart and sugar in his blood (he’s the namesake “Peter” of local Peterbrooke Chocolatier).

Sweet Pete’s features an incredible array of homemade sweets, from fine chocolates and assorted candies to hand-pulled taffies, artisan marshmallows, caramels, gummies, lollipops in all shapes and old-time ice cream treats.  Their products contain no artificial flavors, colors or high-fructose syrup. The company also offers gluten free, vegan and organic sweets–they’ve even got vegan sundaes and 18 flavors of made-to-order organic cotton candy! Our favorite is the salted caramels, which are ridiculously addictive. Seriously.

This weekend, Sweet Pete’s is open on Saturday from 10:30 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. Kids can score free pictures with Santa & Mrs. Clause, and enjoy Candy Christmas story time. We bet snowball fights will be pretty popular, too.

Sweet Pete’s is located at 1922 Pearl Street, between West 9th and 10th Streets in Historic Springfield.  Just follow the snow!

Don’t miss the holiday window displays downtown!

2 Dec

Downtown storefront windows have once again come alive with festively-decorated holiday scenes created by local artists, designers and businesses. The “Holidays Through the Years” windows put up by PRI productions are especially fun, and help make downtown a magical place to explore, shop and dine this Christmas season. This weekend, why  not take your kids on holiday window hunt? Here’s a map to help you plan your trip. Downtown Vision has also created a great Celebrate the Holiday, Celebrate Downtown guide.

Take the Trolley to Art Walk tonight!

1 Dec

Residents in Riverside and Avondale can hop aboard the Trolley tonight to visit one of Downtown’s most vibrant events: the First Wednesday Art Walk.

Since the November Art Walk Trolley experiment was such a success, the Riverside Trolley will again have extended service until Midnight for the December Art Walk. So, this Wednesday, you can hang up those car keys and enjoy a relaxing ride downtown (with special tunes provided by local DJs on board!).

You also won’t want to miss some exciting art installations in five of the downtown JTA Skyway stations (or a free Skyway ride from 5-10 p.m.). The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is celebrating its 55th anniversary by showcasing a variety of local artists (in partnership with Null Space Gallery and Williams-Cornelius & Associates).

Visit all five station exhibits and you’ll be eligible to win gift certificates from great LOLO restaurants, including Burrito GalleryCafé NolaChewEuropean Street CafeIndochine and Uptown Market , as well as a free membership to the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art. Download the Art Walk Trolley Map here.

Small Biz Saturday, Nov. 27th

17 Nov

We salute American Express for launching a BIG day for small business. The company is urging folks to get out and support their community’s local independent merchants on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. So instead of spending all that money at the Big Chains on Black Friday, save your dollars and spend them on unique items from great local merchants on Small Business Saturday! And if you’re an American Express cardholder and you register for the program, Amex will credit $25 to your account when you spend at least $25 at one of the merchants who’ve signed up as part of the program. Sweet!
